Boston-based DJ Zak Broman has come a long way. At only 18 years old, he worked his way up in Boston's electronic music scene through helping organize parties in abandoned spaces, co-founding the collective underground party aptly named "TRUST". This infamous party garnered a huge following in their local scene and caught the attention of promoters and DJs from across the country. He went on to share the stage with world-class DJs and entertainers.

Zak has since moved to Asia and has played numerous clubs in Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and beyond. He has brought with him a unique, versatile attitude towards music and raw approach that excites audiences globally. In early 2012, he founded the international collective "HOUSE OF D" in an effort to coalesce Chinese and Western alternative nightlife.

INTRODUCING "HOUSE OF D (D房子中国)" . . .

A few friends and I are starting something I'm excited about here in Asia. China is a huge, still largely untapped country full of interesting people and ideas. We want to do something about it.

HOUSE OF D is an international nightlife collective based in China. Our goal is to bridge Chinese alternative nightlife culture with the West and create something unique in the process. We accept any contributions from anyone that will forward our effort.

We do not make a profit; we are trying to connect a nightlife culture to both sides of the globe. I'm asking any producers / DJs / artists to submit something that they would like promoted in mainland China. We will be mostly net-based but will print limited edition materials (mixtapes, stickers etc) that we will distribute internationally, combining Chinese and Western expression.

If this sounds like something you are interested in, we are stoked to hear from you.

Devon Williams is currently touring with bands like Catwalk and Twin Sister on the west coast and his new album drips delightful melancholy all over my goddamn playlist.

I've been crawling through some of my Soundcloud followers and unearthed this really rad label being run out of Chiba, Japan. They're called Yel-owe Records, a Japanese underground hip-hop and beat label managed by Rokjoma, also known as Pigeondust, who are "are diggin mo' unknown mo' better sound anytime". Check out this track of his, backed by filtered samples swirling all over a hi-hat driven beat with a bunch of Japanese MCs switching it up every other minute. This track screams swag to me; it's just so goddamn weird and enthralling:

STAR SLINGER - ROGUE CHO PA EP

DIRTY BEACHES: LO-FI POP DONE CORRECTLY

Alex Zhang Hungtai - namely, Dirty Beaches - describes himself a "trans-Pacific nomad" who has recently been churning out some of the most meaningful shit I've heard in a bit. Viceland UK takes the words right out of my mouth...

" I couldn’t quite figure out what it was until I’d listened to the tracks over and over for about a week. The music is a bit like a drug, in that it makes you crave it over and over again, but that wasn’t what I found mesmerising. It was the refinement, the just-so-ness of every sound and effect – as if each tiny aspect of the tracks had been considered for hours and hours before committing to it. The sort of consideration and perfection that you might associate with some 70s prog band, or The Shadow Ring or Prurient or someone.

Now I have no idea whether that is the case or not – I don’t know whether Alex Zhang Hungtai is a crazy mad perfectionist with pitch-perfect hearing or he just chucked everything together and got lucky a bunch of times. I’d like to think that the former is the case. This isn’t just more of that “lo-fi” (can we lay that term to rest already please?) bedroom dreamy-pop-drone stuff thats been filling up my iTunes of late, this shit is real and deep.

Mr Beaches has currently got a bunch of limited CDs out on Fixture Records, and some vinyl in the works. Check out his MySpace immediately for loads more tracks. "

Very stoked on Jean Nipon's (Institubes, France) upcoming International Meek EP. If the cover is anything to go by, it should be nothing less than excellent. I love how the Institubes crew is pushing this sort of future-tech minimalistic sound that bangs just as hard as yesterday's electro. Jean's personal sound takes a lot from his expertise in hardstyle, hip-hop, and a Japanese-meets-French touch. Dude had a residency in Tokyo for a bit, if you didn't know.

SOFT LIPA: CHINESE JAZZ HIP HOP SWAG

Well, 2010 has been quite a year. A lot has changed for the better. I flew in from Boston a few days ago - blew up Shanghai for NYE. Picture above is related. Thanks to everybody who showed me love in Boston, Shanghai, and everywhere else! I'm putting a video together of my entire trip as of writing this.

Soft Lipa, or 蛋堡 (Dan Bao) is a Taiwanese hip-hop producer that swags on a hundred trillion with jazz sampling reminiscent of the late Tokyo-based Nujabes. Apparently there's a huge movement going on in Taiwan right now with cats trying out this type of production. I'm really into it. Soft Lipa's Winter Street LP blows my fucking mind - although I can understand maybe half of what he's saying, this music is entirely accessible for even non-Mandarin speakers. Just some chill shit to sit back to - so check it out.

ITALO-DISCO MEETS LO-FI POP: CASA DEL MIRTO

I'm floored by Casa Del Mirto. This guy puts Italo-disco through a chillwave filter and the result is gem after gem of lo-fi pop. Definitely a unique sound in a chillwave sea (SEE WHAT I DID THERE?) of monotony. There's also plenty of French touch all over some of these joints. BOSTON HIP-HOP: AN INTERVIEW WITH DURKIN & BLACK EL . . .

This interview has been a long time coming. During the past couple of months, Boston hip-hop staple Black Element and DJ Ryan Durkin released a free album called Color Commentary. These dudes have been around for a hot minute - Durkin is a fixture at every relevant club in Boston. Black Element has even done a Christmas jam with Big D and The Kids Table.

Inevitably, I had a chat with these dudes about their recent album release. They had a lot to say.

ZAK BROMAN: Firstly, I just want to say the album is sounding tune. How long did it take to produce?

Durkin: Thanks! Color Commentary took about a year to produce. It was slow to start because we weren't sure what our "sound" was going to be. We just wanted songs that weren't too repetitive and sounded big enough to perform live. We also worked hard to avoid hip-hop cliches on the production and vocal side which is hard because there's so many. Once we banged out "Once a Week" and "Go!", we had more direction and things came together quicker. Overall, I am really proud of the end product.

Black EL: Off and on for a year -but really if you added up all the days it would probably be closer to six months. Durkin was finishing school and I was working a lot so our time was limited, and as Durk said we spent a lot of the time trying to find our sound. That process by itself took up a majority of that time, but after that it came together pretty quickly. We also did a lot of running around to different studios with Durk's trusty laptop because on certain tracks we needed some keys played. It's funny how this project was made with just a laptop and some old software, and recorded in my parent's basement and totally mixed in our boy Jelani's room. Biyaaaaaaaaaa!

ZB: When did you guys begin making music together? 

Durkin: EL and I met through Jelani the MC a couple years ago. I made a few beats for his first album, A Major Minority. Soon after, EL started booking shows and needed a DJ. We worked out some pretty awesome live routines and realized we liked performing together. Then the idea of a Black EL album produced entirely by me came up. We wanted something that would allow us to keep doing live shows that were big, loud, manic and rooted in party-rocking. We wanted to be a MC/DJ duo that didn't sound like anyone else, on stage or on wax (is on wax a hip-hop cliche? shit...).

ZB: On this LP, it seems Black EL is speaking a lot about his personal background, with numerous mentions about graduating. Does this have any special place compared to your previous releases? 

Durkin: While EL definitely touches on some very specific experiences in his own life on the album, I think the content of the album is definitely relatable for both of us. For me the album is about trying to do something extraordinary with your life and all the things that stand in the way of that, anything from student loans and day jobs to old habits and insecurities. It's about working hard to stay motivated when all you want to do is go out, get drunk and sleep all day on Saturday. In a lot of ways it's about straddling the line of childhood and adulthood, something I know most people in my social circle are struggling with.

Black EL: Pretty much the whole album is about dealing with life after college and standing on your own two feet. I've taken like 90% of the content out of my own life with the other 10% out of other peoples personal experiences that I know of. Sometimes I will just tell a story, like on "Sunday Drive" which is loosely based on one my own personal experiences. I think it does hold a special place though because this release is very personal. "Pride" is probably the most personal record I have done to date, and people seem to realize that this project is more of a insight into my life and my thoughts.

ZB: Any special meaning behind "Color Commentary"?

 Black EL: Pretty much. Color Commentary means a few things, first me dealing with things in the world as a black male as well as being a art major in college played a role in naming the project. However, I still feel that this project is easily repeatable to anyone of any color, because of its wide range of songs and their respective topics. Anyone right now can relate to being broke and pursuing their dream, because the recession has hit everyone especially those who graduated college in the last 3-4 years. The album really focuses on taking that next step towards your dream, whether you're full conscious and have learned from your past (see "Pride") or you're currently lost (see "Sunday Drive"). Anyone can relate to the speed bumps and stop signs on the road to success, its not easy and Color Commentary tells that story. Not to mention, I'm also a huge sports fan and you can pick out the sports references that are sprinkled throughout the whole project, it's funny because I never intended on actually dropping those references... I blame SportsCenter.

ZB: How has the reception been for the LP so far? Any touring plans?

Durkin: We're doing ok. We've gotten a lot of hometown love. The video release party we threw at the Annie Mulz shop on Newbury St. was the first moment where we felt like we had people in Boston that believed in us. It felt great.

Black EL: People have really dug it so far, we want to take the more grassroots approach by getting people in the area aware of our music. So far we have had nothing but positive feedback, and honestly I'm pretty humbled by that. CHILL ASS HIP-HOP: A REWIND TO SUMMER

I felt like this past summer was one in which I delved into a lo-fi hip-hop phase. I'm talking about the bass-driven, sometimes-tropical-sometimes-funky jams that kept rotating in my playlist while I walked around the old dusty alleys and streets of southern China. This post is dedicated to Summer 2010, where shit was consistently chill and the nights permeated with drunken hazes.

I know that I've been hyping the shit out of Parisian beatmaker Onra so often that he should just start paying me, but I can't deny that this cat easily put out the album of the summer. The Long Distance LP blended future funk with a throwback sensibility. The title track, "Long Distance", is a testament to how this album made me feel - an appreciation for living abroad amongst all the city lights and people China and Hong Kong have been throwing at me.

Treefight For Sunlight is Danish twee-pop at it's finest. This MP3 is so just so goddamn catchy - at first, it's almost too happy to take seriously, but overall I feel it keeps it's integrity. I am serious on this one - it's one of those tracks that makes you go "wow" out loud and turn down your subwoofer in fear of waking up your entire block. I think it's almost compulsory to throw in a track from NON Records in every blog post. I can assure you they're not paying me; the label is just that damn legitimate. This overlooked gem of a single from the immensely unique chillwaver Palmbomen really takes me there, if "there" signifies blowing an eight ball and watching an animal sacrifice in the confines of a spaceship passing the outer ring of the solar system.

The criminally overlooked Dutch duo TWR72 has been stuck in my iTunes queue for a little while. Dubbed by Erol Alkan as "ones to look out for", they've been gained support from big names like Laidback Luke, Brodinski, Bart B More, and others.

This track blows my mind - undoubtedly one of the smoother dance remixes I've heard in a while. And just as you're enjoying the slick production on this one, a crazy synth-stab drop comes out of nowhere and the joint goes apeshit.

I've been hearing about the electro scene "dying" for a couple months now. I beg to differ. I feel as if it's evolving - and not into dubstep. The music is becoming more fluid and rhythmic, with less emphasis on the drop. Get into it.

Ganz Nackisch is the Dutch solution for Shadow Dancer and Crystal Castles' illegitimate lovechild. That's the best way I can put it. These songs have been in constant rotation for me. I can't get enough of it - why they haven't blown up yet is beyond me. I highly recommend these guys.

I've been a sucker for alt-folk for as long as I can remember. Here are some gems I'd like to share with yall.

We Are Trees, based out of Virginia Beach, defines their music as "acoustic lo-fi bedroom folk pop". I was convinced this was a side-project from Grizzly Bear's Daniel Rossen, but it's actually a completely different dude. That's not to say they sound exactly fucking alike. The production is top-notch on these songs. I wouldn't be surprised to see these guys blow up fairly soon.

Maryland-based Cotton Jones hits a certain sweet spot for me. There's the trademark folky-desperation-bluesy thing coating his voice. Oh, and they're also coming to TT the Bear's in Cambridge this October, so you should probably check it out.

And of course, how could I forget to add Old Canes in a folk music post? This is the side project from The Appleseed Cast's Chris Crisci. I'm so stoked to be sharing this with you. While entry level dance music alts still get a boner over played-out dubstep, it's music like THIS that people should get excited about. Moombahton is a genre coined by DJ Dave Nada who, by chance, slowed down the "Moombah" Afrojack remix to a cool 108 BPM. It's similarities to reggaeton created the "-ton" attached the genre's name.

Imagine taking Dutch dirty house, slap it with a reggaeton vibe, and sprinkle a bit of the build-up suspense and ultimate drop that dubstep has - you have moombahton. You can take my word on this having a crazy effect on the clubs, even in China.

This immediately gets everybody going, trust me.

This Hey Today! remix of Tiga absolutely blows my mind every time I listen to it. As of writing this, this has never failed to get people moving whenever I stick it in one of my DJ sets.

Their Young EP just dropped on Moshi Moshi not too long ago, and I have kept it under heavy rotation since. The choruses are extremely catchy and interlaced with lo-fi stabs and samples. This has been a busy week in China. Thankfully, I've gotten some days off from work that let me do what I needed to do.

This flier is for a residency I have in Dongguan, China. Vita Bar is owned by some chill-ass Brazilians who let me play out the music I want to. Most of the bars around here have a pretty shitty rotation of music from five years ago (although you can't blame them; it's China). The golden exception is the "Chinese drug disco" nearby my apartment that hardly lets white people in and is frequented by the off-duty factory workers (16-22 years old). The floor is hydraulic and they play hardstyle Chinese techno. That's a whole different blog post, though. I'll touch on it later.

Anyway, lately I've been digging these tracks with classy synth stabs.

I'm ambivalent about chillwave lately. I feel like any asshole can now record delay-driven vocals over some obscure tempo-shifted vintage pop sample, hardly master it in their pirated copy of Ableton, and then post it virally on some dumbshit pseudo-artsy Tumblr account only to call it "chillwave". Where did the authenticity in this genre go? I'm starting to think it was never there. This past year showed that a lot of the blog-hyped electronic musicians had pisspoor showmanship when it came to playing shows. Forerunners like Neon Indian have polished their live act quickly. Washed Out seems like he's made it as well, if not only for his good looks. Toro Y Moi seems to show the most promise, as his newer music is heading in a different direction via some throwback rock and roll vibe.

I will be interested to see what happens to this genre in a year. That being said, I'm really into BLACKBIRD BLACKBIRD. They're based out of San Fransisco. You should scope this video for their single "Blind":

I don't know where to begin. Let's just get the ball rolling on this one.

Hi, I'm Zak Broman. At the time of writing this, I am twenty-two years old and making a living as an English teacher in southern China. I live roughly two hours north of Hong Kong. I'm originally from Boston, where I spent most of a misguided youth getting into all sorts of situations.

I'm going to use this blog mainly for sharing the music I enjoy, but you might also see some videos and pictures of my strange adventures in the Far East. I have seen a ton of shit since I arrived here ten months ago. I'm trying to get a camcorder at the moment so I can show you all the batshit craziness that is the People's Republic of China. The city of Dongguan, to be exact:

Most of the people reading this know me as a DJ and party promoter, which is something I picked up about three years ago. I am half of the Boston-based duo ROGUEWAVES. Although I no longer live in Boston, Justin and I are still constantly in touch, and we plan on releasing our EP via file swapping instrumentals and vocals. We are also tentatively having a reunion show this upcoming December.

I also co-founded an underground party called "TRUST", which recently had a party in South Boston - pictures of that as soon as I can get a hold of them. Here's a video of the previous madness, when we did a basement party with our friend Nate, who is the drummer for Passion Pit:

I recently did a summer interview with my homeboy Genevan Heathen, who heads from France. You might know him as the dude who MCs on the Cuizinier (of French hip-hop group TTC) mixtapes. He also does some pretty rad throwback jams.
